ScrawlrBox #44 – April 2019

Featured Artist: Kiki B

Kiki B is an American artist and illustrator living in the Netherlands. Though she’s been an artist and writer for as long as anyone can remember, her passion for lettering and typography began about 6 years ago. Most of her work is good old-fashioned ink on paper, but she dabbles in digital art as well. Kiki is best known for her precision, attention to detail, and passion for experimenting with different styles and mediums. She loves combining vintage typefaces with detailed illustrations to create expressive contemporary pieces that are as ornate and beautiful as they are legible. Her art is heavily influenced by her favorite music, video games, and curse words.

Challenge: Words Of Wisdom

This month we want you to think about an inspirational quote, something that motivates you to create something or be better person. It can be a famous quotation, something your grandma always said or something you created yourself. Use the supplies in this box to either write out the quote in beautiful brush lettering (like our featured artist) or draw something to effectively communicate the essence of the phrase.

ScrawlrTip: The Ecoline pens are water based and can be blended with water. Try creating colour gradients and experiment with different colour combinations.

What was in the box?

Royal Talens Ecoline Brush Pen

The Ecoline brush pen uses a fantastic transparent liquid watercolour ink. The ink has a shorter drying time than other watercolours and is beautifully vivid. The bright ink lends itself to blending and mixing extremely well, simply add water to the colour to mix and blend. The pens use a large fibre-brush nib which is soft and flexible, perfect for achieving a variety of line widths and effects. These nibs also keep their shape very well. The ink is water-based and not very light-fast, so Ecoline advise keeping your finished work protected in a portfolio for better colour retention.

Uni PIN Drawing Pen Dark/Light Grey –

The Uni Pin fineline drawing pen features waterproof and fadeproof pigment ink. Ideal for all types of art and design, including sketching and technical drawing. The black ink pens are the most popular, but Uni have recently expanded their range to include more colours. We have included the light and dark grey pens, so you can experiment with how these colours and different line widths can add something a little more subtle to your work than the standard black.

Viking Element 1 Graphite Pencil

A new modern classic from Viking, made in Denmark. The Viking Element 1 pencil has a beautifully simple matt black barrel, with silver metallic text printed on the classic hexagonal shaped barrel. The graphite core is a very smooth HB lead providing a great all-round pencil for drawing and writing.

Faber Castell Kneadable Artists Eraser

These lacquer coated pencils don’t have a traditional wooden casing, giving you a pure stick of colour that can be used in many different ways. It has five times more coverage potential than a normal coloured pencil and can be sharpened in any standard sharpener. The solid lead gives each pencil added heft, with each pencil weighing in at 12g.
