ScrawlrBox #51 – November 2019

Featured Artist: Riso Chan

Riso Chan is an artist and creative teacher based in Amsterdam. She grew up in an artistic environment, her mother being a sculptor, which inspired her to explore her own creativity from an early age. She believes that portraits can be a very powerful way to express emotions and human beauty. It is a language on its own, that doesn’t use words to communicate, this is why most of her work revolves around portraits. Riso works mainly with watercolor and gouache, although she also experiments with digital painting occasionally.

Challenge: Face of Emotion

This month we are providing you with the tools and inspiration to explore Gouache (pronounced ‘gwosh’) paint. A water-based medium that is like a mash-up of water colour and acrylic, these paints give a flatter matte finish and are much more opaque than standard water colours. Use the paints a little thicker that you would a normal watercolour and try your hand at producing an emotive portrait. Use the inspiration from our featured artist to paint bold strokes and build up layers to create texture. Who will you choose to paint and which emotion will you try and convey?
