Featured Artist: Mirela Duta
Mirela Duta’s practice is an in-depth research exploring the complex relationship between the concepts of autonomy and validation through the artist’s perspective when confronted with internal and external challenges. Attempting to secure her “independence”, Duta aims to understand the importance of the artists’ engagement with the world, their personal commitments and responsibilities, and to what extent these factors define one’s artistic career.
The variety of media, materials, surfaces and methodologies explored, contributes and narrates Duta’s visual response and understanding of her investigation. Immersing into colourful, complex and juxtaposed geometric abstraction along with the lengthy process behind the production of the work, enables her to analyse the contradictory aspects influencing artists’ identities.
Through the myriad of small squares, the artworks display exactness and control, aspects associated with the concept of autonomy. Additionally, their repetitive and structured depiction across various surfaces establishes a balanced relationship between the outside world and the artists’ inner self.
