Dark? Check. Moody? Check? Loose? Check! From dark doorways leading to somewhere we (kinda don’t but kinda do) want to explore, to ghosty cats, these pieces by Mel tick all the boxes of creating magic from this months supplies

So, where is that doorway leading to?

"Good question. I think it's whatever a person would like it to be!When I was painting it, I imagined it lead to another dimension of sorts. A world that's hauntingly familiar but too strange to call home, a little bit like a foggy dream you try to recall when you wake up. I tried to capture that feeling in the other pieces I did for the challenge, so hopefully they tie together in a somewhat cohesive way.I will had that a portal to another dimension is a wonderful place to stash all the extra art supplies you really shouldn't be buying. Not that any of us would know anything about that of course!"

A #ScrawlrChallenge so good it had to be framed! And we whole hearty agree. We absolutely love the 3D element of this piece- using tissue paper to build the flowers is genius! - All of the pigments clashing, the marks, the madness and chaos... not one bit of this we didn’t enjoy.

Is this your go to style? Or something new to experiment with this medium?

“My artwork is usually the outcome of play, I try to forget the conventional ‘rules’ around the medium and just let my inner child enjoy the experience. The crystalline watercolours were an amazing medium for this, as you’re almost forced to relinquish control of the outcome.”

Lily made this look easy! Using the paints with total control for this wonderful floral #ScrawlrChallenge creation. all the layers and tones creating depth and definition, simply beautiful.

How did you find using these messy but very fun pigments?

“I found it so mesmerising watching the pigments bleed into the page and naturally mix with each other. I always try to make contrast in my art, so having that swirly background with all of the details in the flower was something I really enjoyed making!”
