It’s a tough job looking after the undergrowth but no worries this little lady looks like she has it all under conrtol. We love how whimiscal this peice is, all the colours and paint strokes are just beautiful.

What was your inspiration?

”I loved the featured artist’s work for this box, so I knew I wanted to paint flowers and a lot of plants! I started sketching out things that came to mind and slowly the character emerged. I was also inspired by all the little creatures we have in our garden, which I think was the reason I made her small! I really like Winsor and Newton’s greens and blues, which helped me pick the colours!”

Some busy buzzy bees in action doing a great job. We love all the glourious colours and textures and layers in this one. Really gives those bumble bees a sense of movement.

What techniques did you use for this?

“My eldest son, Gideon, is super artie as well, I show him techniques that I have learnt, and he shows me some that he is learning. We was sat in the garden and he said “Hey! We could print with leaves!”. I covered the bees in masking fluid from a previous box, and then covered the page in a watercolour wash. Sprinkled on some salt. I took some leaves from the garden and put a small bit of water colour on them and laid it on top of the wet wash. We had a heat wave so it wasn’t too long to wait until dried. I left as much salt on as I could after, because loooove that texture! I have the paints already, they are my absolute favourites, so with this box I went for painting as many different textures as I could, playing around and seeing what I could throw on top of the paint to make it work a different way. I even tried soil on one.”

10/10 would let his charming scarecrow watch over our garden. And by watch over we mean welcome all the cretaures in with a friendly “hello”. We love the variation in line work in this one, really adds some special character.

What made you think of a scarecrow??

“When I saw the prompt, the first thing that came to mind was a scarecrow my late grandad had at his allotment to protect his vegetables from the birds. So I wanted to create something in a children’s book illustration style to represent that memory.”
