Sit Down With Our #090 Featured Artist

Georgette Newton

Featured Artist / #127 ScrawlrBox

Inspired by the quirky, colourful and unconventional, Georgette, aka Naptrapped Art, creates vibrant illustrations and mixed-media pieces, often using recycled materials and a dash of humour. Constantly experimenting with different techniques, her work embraces playfulness and creativity in every form.

The name ‘Naptrapped Art’ was born from a moment of stillness, trapped under a sleeping little one with only a pen and paper within reach. That simple act of drawing sparked a passion that continues to grow, leading to community art projects, charity exhibitions and a dedication to encouraging people to embrace their creativity.

How did your art journey begin, and what first sparked your interest in illustration and character design?

It’s funny, I’ve never really related myself to character design. It’s always interesting to see how others view me as an artist. I just know I’ve always found myself doodling silly things on coffee cups and napkins, and then it kind of accidentally became more intentional.

Your characters often have personality and expression. When designing someone new, do you start with emotion, narrative, or visual idea?

Boredom. I start with boredom. I’m a big advocate for boredom, even as it becomes harder in modern times. It’s nice to give my brain the freedom to just look at objects and shapes and think not about what they are, but what they could be.

The Derwent Chromaflow Pencils are known for their smooth, blendable colour. What drew you to using them in your toolkit?

I love colour, control and smoothness, which is why I always find myself drawn to pencils. I have a fondness for drawing on non-traditional canvases, like cardboard, and they’re soft enough that I don’t have to push hard to get those punchy colours I love.

When you are not being creative, what will we find you doing?

I’m an Art Technician at a secondary school, so when I’m not being creative, I’m helping other people be creative. I love it. I get to play with a myriad of art supplies every day while watching new artists find their groove. Plus, it’s a great way to remind myself of all those artistic fundamentals that can be so easy to forget.
