Add Water

As these blocks are water soluble you can add a splash for more watercolour type effects.

From the block: swipe a wet brush into the block for an intense lay down of pigment. This works particularly well with the white compressed charcoal for those pops and highlights.

Mark Making

Each side of the block will create a different widths and thicknesses – add a variation of pressure and you have yourself a mark making party.  The flat faces of the blocks are great for depositing vast swathes of colour and covering large areas quickly. You can also use the edges of the block to create smaller, precision marks.

Starting Out

Start with the compressed charcoal bylaying down some gestural lines. Thecompressed charcoal is harder than theDerwent blocks and makes a good basefor later marks.
