Bastien Marienne aka. Babtwo

Between spontaneity and dynamic painting strokes, Babtwo seeks in each portrait to convey emotions and sensitivities. Self-taught and at first rocked by the underground universe, he then decides to turn to the practice on canvas to devote himself to new creations, study and experiment different techniques.

Fascinated by humans, it was these first courses in medical school and his first anatomical drawings that inspired him and very quickly aspired to make portraits: Deconstruct to reconstruct, dissociate to re-associate, play with colours, oppositions and contrasts, volumes and spaces, shadows and light, textures and materials; try to go beyond the superficial lines, to bring out the deepest in the raw state, glimpse a soul, capture a moment and read through.

This months box is all about texture and how its application can be manipulated to give an added dimension to your artwork. We have included heavy body acrylic paints which are thick and sculptural, plus the tools to apply them in various ways. But don't stop there. Try adding other tactile materials to the paints to further develop your texturised compositions. Be sure to think about not only how the thick layers make your work look, but also how it might feel to touch and use these elements to your advantage. Enjoy experimenting with this medium and (as always) we look forward to seeing your Scrawlr creations.

Daler Rowney System 3 Heavy Body Acrylics

These Daler-Rowney System 3 Heavy Body Acrylics have been reformulated to offer more pigment and versatility than ever. The high pigment load used gives it excellent colour strength, permanence, light-fastness and opacity. They have a superior heavy body consistency offering a unique peak retention, ideal for impasto techniques and use with a palette knife (or card). It's an extremely versatile and manageable water-based acrylic, but also offers all the virtues of a heavy body consistency. These paints are fully intermixable which lends to limitless colour combining and blending possibilities. They are also suitable for interior and exterior use, making them the perfect medium for all mixed media art projects.

Pro Arte Series 60 PROLON

The Pro Arte Series 60 Prolon brush is a tinted nylon multi-media purpose brush with a round brush tip. This brush is comprised of durable and soft nylon hairs with a good colour-carrying capacity. Ideal for clean and crisp paint applications with acrylic and other thickly textured paints, as well mixed media projects. They are made from a high-quality synthetic hair with great colour retention and pointing qualities. They are very resilient with densely packed bristles which makes them great for use with high-viscosity paints such as oil, acrylic and heavy body acrylic.

Faber Castsell 9000 2B Pencil

The Faber Castell 9000 is a classic pencil, launched by Count Alexander von Faber-Castell in 1905. Each pencil features a graphite black lead, which is made from very finely ground graphite and clay. This combination ensures that the pencil performs a smooth application and is never scratchy. Its lead is fully bonded with the wood surround which makes it particularly break-resistant and it also has a water-based varnish which is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. This pencil is a top-quality instrument designed with your needs in mind, making it a firm favourite among artists and illustrators.

Lots of fun and good quality paints and board

Bought this to try with my 11 yr old, neither of us have used acrylics before. We used it while he had covid and was feeling miserable, he said it made his day because we laughed so much. Our pictures look like toddler finger paintings and we covered the dining table in paint - he has them on his bookshelf in his bedroom as he loves them. So although we didn't create anything particularly "good" it was worth every penny for the memories

Enjoyed this box very much. The heavy body acrylics were interesting to use with a lovely texture to them. Haven't explored all the possibilities with this paint yet, but I like what I see so far.
