Jess Kirkman

Jess Kirkman is an award winning artist and designer who specializes in alcohol inks, resin and encaustic mediums, using them to create abstract universes and feel-good art. After graduating with a BFA in Communications Design from Syracuse University, Jess worked for top names across the branding, publishing and advertising industries before making her way to lead the team at Taco Bell Design as their Executive Creative Director.

Jess balances her career with her passion for art, painting for hours every morning before her 9-5 starts. Her main goal is to spread creative learnings, insights and inspiration to her instagram art community. Every piece she makes is infused with good vibes that she hopes will make the world a better place, little by little.

Nebula

(A glowing form of clouds made up of interstellar gas and dust)

In a galaxy far far away... this months box is going intergalactic! Pour, dip and tip the ink to experiment with the abstract fluid forms it creates. Use the tools to drip, drop and blow around the ink to see what unique marks you can make. Try swirling your paint brush in while wet and then back in again once dry with the extender to see how it expands your galactic arrangements.

What was in the box?

Marabu Alcohol Inks (x3)

These Alcohol-based, permanent inks take fluid painting to a whole new level, offering unlimited design possibilities with their wide range of flow techniques. The brilliantly bold and bright colours are quick-drying, acid-free and can also be mixed to create your own colour combinations. These inks are best used on a non-absorbent paper, but they can also be used on any smooth, non-absorbent surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramic or porcelain. The creative possibilities and applications are endless.

Marabu Alcohol Ink Extender

Marabu Alcohol Inks are perfectly complemented by this Alcohol Ink Extender. The extender is an indispensable supply for many techniques and can be used not only to increase the alcohol inks’ workable time (slowing the drying time), but also to lighten pigment, lift colour and increase the transparency of your inks, experiment to create a number of stunning effects.

Pipette

This versatile little tool is fantastic for mixing and adding ink to your work. You can use it for marbling, mixing colours or applying your inks and extender directly to paper.

Paper Straw

This simple, but useful tool will help you create magical patterns in your ink with a gentle puff of air. Just try not to breathe in the fumes!!!

ProArte Masterstroke Paintbrush

This paint brush is well suited for all of your painting needs. It can be used for watercolour, acrylic, oil and alcohol mediums as the tip is made from durable synthetic fibres.

Yupo Pad A5 100gsm

Yupo is a non-porous, acid free and pH neutral synthetic paper. It is completely waterproof, stain-resistant and is an intriguing alternative to traditional art papers. With the 10 sheets included, you will have plenty to test out and experiment with this months supplies.

Inks

These inks are so interesting to use. You can very easily get something that looks really cool. I wouldn't have discovered these inks if not for Scrawlrbox.

Needs safety information

My issue with this kit is that it neglects to fully brief users on the health and safety and ppe that should be considered to use AI safely.
The inclusion of a straw is particularly worrisome as it just isn’t safe to be inhaling the fumes of ai and blowing through a straw requires full lungs and no ppe mask.

I hope new users of AI who try this kit will use caution and make sure to use in well ventilated areas given the smell, even if they aren’t aware of the dangers AI presents to lungs, skin and eyes.

It should also be made clear that this is not safe for children to use, or for use around pets.

I’ve used alcohol inks for a while but bought this ScrawlrBox as a way of trying the Marabu inks, they were fun but I prefer other brands (Copic and Ranger are my go to)

As someone who is passionate about this medium I feel the lack of safety information in this kit lets it down quite badly.

Have fun with stains

I've wanted to explore alcohol ink for a while, these are good color combination and i also used them for marbling! Works good! Not as vibrant as if applied directly on the paper but still you can make fun effects with them.

Very unique supplies by ScrawlrBox this time around! Every supply in this box was a first for me. This is exactly what ScrawlrBox is about. I've since gone and bought some more of the inks and the paper to try out the combination and create some eye catching art work. The results are outstanding.
